Recent Israeli Attacks “Significantly Weakened” Syria’s Air-Defense Systems

On the night of June 30 until the early morning of July 1, 2019, Israel carried out its biggest attack against Syria’s air defense since 1982. The attack ultimately killed 16 Syrian civilians near Damascus and injured 12 Syrian military personnel in Homs. This was the extent of the damage revealed at the time but, according to Syrian military sources, the damage was much more severe and served to significantly weaken Syria’s air-defense capabilities.

Escalation Looms as Netanyahu Warns Syria’s New S-300 Defense System Will Not Stop Israeli Bombing

DAMASCUS, SYRIA — Though undeniably a game-changer in the Syrian conflict, the imminent delivery of S-300 air defense systems to the Syrian government could risk dangerously escalating the conflict. Indeed, recent statements from top Israeli and Syrian government officials have made it clear that open war between the two countries could potentially ignite in the coming weeks and months not despite, but because of, the presence of Syria’s improved and upgraded air defense systems.

Russian S-300 Air Defense System May Make Syria “Untouchable,” But Israel Seems Ready to Test It

MOSCOW —  After the Russian Ministry of Defense held the Israel Air Force solely responsible for the recent downing of a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane in Syria, Russia has announced that it will move forward with a long-standing Syrian government request for more advanced air defense systems, namely the Russian-made S-300. Syria purchased the S-300 in 2013 but, at the request of Israel, the system was never delivered.

Syria’s (Russian made) Pantsir S1 system makes the grade in combat

The Russian Ministry of Defense has been consistent in its report that Syrian defenses successfully stopped some 71 of the 103 missiles that the triad of Western powers launched at targets in Syria. One of the systems that deserves the credit for the missile kills is the legacy system, called the Pantsir S1 Surface to air missile and anti-aircraft artillery system. NATO has its own coding for this system, and for Western powers this system is known as the S-22 “Greyhound.”
