(ANTIWAR.COM) — With the US forever investing more into their nuclear arsenal, ensuring they have the world’s biggest collection of city destroying arms, the fact that none have been used in over 70 years is a silver lining to many, but within the administration, it may be a problem that needs correcting.
History is replete with entrepreneurs and inventors who have pushed the envelope of innovation to the very edge of human imagination and beyond. But new ways of doing things have a natural tendency to obfuscate the old ways, and there are always individuals who benefit from the status quo and are quick to dismiss and condemn new contraptions and revolutionary ideas.
Neither Will Hurd (R-TX) nor Pete Aguilar (New Dem-CA) are very popular in their districts and, frankly, neither deserves reelection. A Democrat is likely to beat Hurd, although the DCCC and the Castro Machine have its fingers on the scale for a worthless Blue Dog in South Texas. And it will take some time before a progressive is in position to primary Aguilar in the Inland Empire. They’re both useless back-benchers from overwhelmingly Hispanic districts and this week they co-sponsored a DACA compromise-- a “discussion draft” ahead of Trump’s January 19 deadline.
The Belgian city of Ghent plays host to a broad range of projects and initiatives around the commons. But it has yet to adopt a model which really places a commons-focused approach and logic at the core of its institutions and processes. Recent work undertaken by experts on the commons provides a roadmap for the city to re-imagine and reconfigure[Read More...]
Last week protests broke out in the city of Isfahan, spreading to Iran’s remaining cities, including the capital, Tehran. The riots have given voice to calls for socio-economic change amid rising deprivation and unemployment among young people and a sense of injustice among poorer Iranians. These groups have suffered the brunt of inefficient economic management and the effects of the[Read More...]
The Russian Ministry of Defence has now released more information on the drone attack on Russia’s two Syrian bases at Khmeimim and Tartus on Saturday 6th January 2018.
Yesterday reports from Russia spoke of the drone attack using US sourced technology and of the attack coinciding with the presence of a US Poseidon surveillance aircraft close to the bases.
Today Russia’s Ministry of Defence says is saying that the drone attack was launched from a Turkish controlled area in the heart of a so-called ‘de-escalation zone’ in north west Syria’s Idlib province.
As the new year beings it is not just the time to draw the line under the previous one, but is also a great moment for making predictions. Throughout centuries there’s been all sorts of prophets that would seek to warn those around them by using the mind of a gifted. However, there has always been enough of those who would dismiss any warning by calling it untrustworthy or even heretical.
In 1987, as part of a typical politician’s attempts to seem down with the kids, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher did an interview with the pop magazine Smash Hits. There was just one problem: Thatcher knew absolutely nothing about pop music, or anything even close. So her advisors drew up a briefing, including a brief […](Read more...)
After her Golden Globes award speech, liberal elites are jumping for joy at the prospect of Oprah Winfrey potentially running for US president and challenging Donald Trump in 2020.
Oprah’s speech acted like a religious cleansing, forgiving hollywood for its sins, and propelling Winfrey into the role of neo-liberal messiah and savior, leading Michael Krieger to ask, ‘if this is the future the plutocrats have planned for the people?’
High-level inter-Korean talks at the border village of Panmunjeom not only represent a vital step in Winter Olympics’ diplomacy but also offer a tantalizing chance of a breakthrough in stalled six-party discussions.
Yesterday Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein made an unprecedented move by unilaterally releasing the entire transcript of Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson’s testimony to the US Senate.
Fallout over the released, highly redacted document started within hours.
Donald Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen was quick to jump on Feinstein’s leak, by filing a pair of lawsuits on Tuesday against Buzzfeed and Fusion GPS.

Clearly, Donald Trump combines the worst features of the worst Presidents in American history — George W. Bush and Barack Obama — and displays those worst features even more than both of them together did.
Please stop attacking one another for the evils that have been inflicted on you by this small group of sociopaths, America. Stop buying into the two-party good cop/bad cop schtick that the elites use to turn urban Americans against rural Americans and turn your anger toward your real enemies.

What really seems to be annoying the Americans is not some sort of outlandish attack on the Internet by Russia, but the fact that the Russian military is now a force to reckon with.
-by NoahWhatever will become of Steve Bannon? Too many people have focused excessive attention on just his role in Michael Wolfe's Fire & Fury book when he was, in fact, by far, not the only source of the information about Señor Trumpanzee and the dangerously massive insanity and dysfunction of Trump and the Trump administration confirmed by the book.
Once upon a time, we worried about oil and other energy. Now, a song from 1930 seems to be appropriate: Today, we have a surplus of oil, which we are trying to use up. That never happened before, or did it? Well, actually, it did, back around 1930. As most of us remember, that was not a pleasant time. It[Read More...]
In an excellent article, published by Al Jazeera, Shenila Khoja-Moolji wonders why the West (including its stalwart feminists) have not been galvanized to protest and demand the release of a 16-year old Palestinian girl, Ahed Tamimi, detained by Israeli authorities for defending her home and family from Israeli soldiers, soon after they had shot her 15-year old cousin in the face[Read More...]
There is a real – but largely concealed – war which is taking place throughout the African continent. It involves the United States, an invigorated Russia and a rising China. The outcome of the war is likely to define the future of the continent and its global outlook. It is easy to pin the blame on US President Donald Trump,[Read More...]

However, by the mid-1960s, parts of the eastern provinces of Cambodia were bases for North Vietnamese[Read More...]

Should progressives support the efforts of Trump and Putin to bring about rapprochement between Russia and the U.S.? Or to use Trump’s terminology, should progressives support the effort to "get along with Russia"? This might seem like a no-brainer. After all Russia and the US are the world’s major nuclear powers. Catalonia is part of Spain but has its own distinct language, territory, culture and history of resistance to oppression. It was the Spring of 2003, and I was speaking on a panel with other US journalists opposed to the Iraq War. The conservative government in Madrid supported the US invasion; the progressive government in Catalonia did not.

A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Yucatan Basin, near the Gulf of Honduras at 9:52pm Eastern Standard Time (02.52 UTC). The quake depth was estimated to be 6.2 miles (10km). Since this was a sea-based quake, there were a series of tsumami advisories posted for various places around the epicenter of the quake. However, many of these advisories have since been canceled.
This was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in this region of the world.

By the numbers, the craftily-gerrymandered first congressional district of Ohio looks nearly impossible for a Democrat. It includes most of Cincinnati-- Lyle Park and Prospect Hill but not Mount Adams-- but not all of it (which would turn it blue) and enough of Warren County to guarantee Republican majorities. Since the district was redrawn-- after Obama’s 55-44% win against McCain-- Romney won it with 52% and Trump won it 51-45%.
