Activists and World Leaders Reject US-Backed Coup in Venezuela

Leaders throughout Latin America and the world have rejected Tuesday’s coup attempt against Nicolas Maduro. A military uprising began Tuesday morning after a speech by opposition leader Juan Guaido. With full support of the United States and its allies, Guaido illegally proclaimed himself “interim president” in January.
In a tweet, Bolivian President Evo Morales condemned the attempted coup on Tuesday stating, “We strongly condemn the attempted coup d’état on #Venezuela the part of the right which is submissive to foreign interests. Sure that the courageous Bolivarian revolution at the head of the brother @NicolasMaduro, will be imposed on this new attack of the Empire.”
Morales went on to say that the United States “seeks to provoke violence and death in #Venezuela, does not care about human losses.” Morales also called on Latin American governments to condemn the coup attempt and prevent the escalation of violence.

Cuba’s President Miguel Diaz-Canel has likewise rejected the coup attempt, tweeting on Tuesday, “We reject this coup movement that seeks to fill the country with violence.” In his tweet, Diaz-Canel referred to the opposition as “traitors” who are creating “anxiety and terror.”

#Cuba stands by the legitimate government of #Venezuela that is calmly and courageously facing the new coup attempt by the pro-imperialist right with the complicity of the #US and lackey governments of the region.#SomosZonadePaz #SomosCuba #SomosContinuidad pic.twitter.com/zT7uDRmlud

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez has also spoken out, calling for an end to aggression against Latin American countries. Rodriguez also condemned the coup attempt in a tweet on Tuesday saying, “We strongly condemn attempted coup d’etat on #Venezuela. Strong support and solidarity of #Cuba the constitutional President of that Sister Nation @NicolasMaduro to his government and to the Bolivarian and Chavista people.”

Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department is following the events in Venezuela closely and released the following statement, according to TeleSUR.

Mexico reiterates its desire and commitment to finding a peaceful, democratic and dialogue-based solution to this crisis, always privileging unrestricted respect for human rights. Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, consultations are being held with the other sixteen Montevideo Mechanism countries in order to find a common path.”

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reportedly stated that he believes in both nonintervention and dialogue during a Tuesday morning press conference.
Brazil’s Worker’s Party congressman and journalist Paulo Pimenta tweeted on Tuesday, “it is very serious what is happening in Venezuela and it has a name: coup attempt.”

Pimenta also shared video of Maduro supporters rallying in front of Miraflores Palace.

Early on Tuesday, Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza denounced both Colombia and the United States for supporting the actions of self-proclaimed “interim president” Juan Guaido.

We inform the people of Venezuela that we are currently confronting and deactivating a small group of traitorous military personnel who positioned themselves in the Altamira Distributor to promote a coup d’état against the Constitution and the peace of the Republic… This attempt was joined by the murderous far-right… We call on the people to remain on high alert to, together with the glorious Bolivarian National Armed Forces, defeat the coup attempt and preserve peace… We denounce to the international community the support of the Colombian government for this new coup attempt in Venezuela. From Washington and Bogota, all the last months’ unsuccessful unconstitutional actions in Venezuela have been planned.”

Venezuelan minister Vladimir Padrino has states that military personnel “stand firm in defense of the National Constitution and its legitimate authorities.” President Nicolas Maduro has tweeted similar sentiments.

¡Venceremos!
