Pyongyang (GPA) – As the talks between the DPRK and US continue, a new effort has been started to locate the remains of US soldiers killed in action during the Korean War.
United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the latest results of the talks between Washington and Pyongyang on Sunday. This latest round of talks has apparently resulted in “firm commitments” between the two countries to seek out the remains of US soldiers killed in the Korean War according to Pompeo.
Joining Pompeo in Sunday’s round of talks was a group of US generals, marking the first meeting in nine years that DPRK and US military personnel have met.
Putting aside the fact that the Korean War is technically still happening for a moment, this agreement still marks yet another major step towards peace in Korea. It is also another sign of goodwill on the part of the DPRK, once again showing the supposed “hermit kingdom” is having no problem offering concessions to the US to prove their good faith.
This announcement comes a week after the wreckers in the western media attempted to portray the US-DPRK talks as dead in the water following a statement by DPRK’s Foreign Ministry following Pompeo’s last visit. The FM’s statement accused the US of having a “unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization,” but was also followed up by a statement directly from Marshal Kim Jong Un basically saying there was no reason for concern.
Although this statement by Kim would seem to contradict his own Foreign Ministry, there was still a reason some of the DPRK negotiators were upset. The reason behind the Foreign Ministry’s statement (which was under-reported by the US media) was that during the last round of talks Pompeo continued to hold the US position that no concessions -like the much-needed easing of sanctions – will only be provided to Pyongyang once they meet all of the United States’ demands.
This is, of course, a ridiculous demand to make of any country in negotiations, yet even more so with the DPRK. If you consider the history of talks between the DPRK and the US there has been a pattern of Pyongyang expressing a willingness to negotiate – and even taking steps towards disarmament – only to have Washington fail to deliver on their promises.
Besides the offer to restart searches for US war dead, let us not forget that Pyongyang has also taken other steps to appease the US such as returning 3 prisoners to Pompeo on one of his previous visits and, more importantly, the public destruction of their underground weapons testing facility.
The real lesson here is that, once again, the US media blew last weeks events out of proportion due to their thirst for blood. The establishment media and their military industrial complex backers don’t want to see peace in Korea, but even those who don’t like Trump but manage to remain objective can see progress.
