A South Florida woman is regretting calling police on her brother for a family dispute after they showed up and killed him Saturday night.
“I never would have called the cops if I’d known this was going to happen,” Deborah Frazier told the Broward-Palm Beach Times.
“They just came in and started shooting right away.”
Broward County sheriff’s deputies say they were in fear for their lives when they shot Gregory Frazier because he was holding a knife.
But witnesses say they shot him six times in the back as he was eating chicken wings and French fries during a backyard family outing. And if he was holding a knife, it was the “rusty pocketknife” that he always carried.

However, he was holding that knife while arguing with his daughter earlier in the evening, which is what prompted his sister to call 911 in the first place.
According to the Broward-Palm Beach New Times:
Friends and family have confirmed that the man who was shot was Gregory Frazier, 56, who lived at the Pompano Beach home where the shooting took place. His sister, Deborah Frazier, had called 911 because he had been arguing with her daughter. He had a knife in his hand—the small, Swiss Army-style pocket knife that he always carried—she told dispatchers.
When officers arrived, the argument was over, and Frazier was sitting outside in his backyard eating chicken wings and fries. Quartaze Woodard, Frazier’s nephew, who was at the scene, says that three deputies showed up and told Frazier to get down on the ground. Frazier responded, “Leave me alone.” The deputies told him again to get down on the ground. Again, Frazier asked them to leave him alone. After that, Woodard says, the officers shot him. Then, after handcuffing him, and removing the handcuffs once they realized he was non-responsive, they attempted to perform CPR. It was too late.
“I never would have called the cops if I’d known this was going to happen,” Deborah Frazier says. “They just came in and started shooting right away.”
Even if he was holding the knife when deputies arrived, they have not yet said he “lunged” at them with it, which is the word law enforcement generally uses to justify killing citizens with knives, even when they don’t lunge.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office:
Just before 10 p.m. deputies were dispatched to 320 N.W. 14 St. regarding a domestic disturbance call involving a man armed with a knife.
When deputies arrived, someone in the house directed them to the backyard where they encountered the subject who produced a knife. Both deputies fired their weapons. Per BSO policy, they were placed on administrative leave.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded, and pronounced the adult male dead at the scene.
It is not clear if the deputies were wearing body cameras, but some deputies in the department did start using them earlier this year.
But an autopsy should confirm if he was shot six times in the back or not.
