Trump sends warning shot to Merkel: “That’s the big one” tariffs on cars (Video)

US President Donald Trump is threatening the EU with 20% tariffs on European cars in what would amount to a major escalation in a developing trade war.

Trade war sparks boycott of American goods in Canada

US President Donald Trump levied metals tariffs affecting steel and aluminum imports of 25% and 10% respectively on the pretext of national security. Trade rep: tariffs justified for national security, retaliation from partners illicit

US trade representative Robert Lighthizer is presenting Trump’s trade tariffs case as one that is uniquely justified, while the retaliatory measures of America’s trade partners are altogether illicit. America’s interpretation of WTO rules is that as long as America levies tariffs as a security measure, that they’re perfectly legitimate, whereas retaliatory countermeasures are considered unnecessary measures aimed at doing harm to another nation’s economy.

Meetings in the US between the foreign and defense ministers of both the US and India were slated to be held on the 6th of July, which was the rescheduled date from two previous appointments, similarly postponed by the United States. The likely reasoning behind this action is the announcement of meetings between POTUS Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki on 16 July.
