US spy agencies are being sued for failing to warn slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi that he was facing threat and danger. The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, which “defends the freedoms of speech and the press in the digital age”, filed the lawsuit yesterday at the US District Court for the District of Columbia over intelligence agencies’ failure to uphold a US government policy.

The Justice Department has twenty-seven ongoing leak investigations, according to Attorney General Jeff Sessions. That is a staggering number, and now, the Knight First Amendment Institute and Freedom of The Press Foundation are suing for records on how those investigations may infringe upon the First Amendment rights of journalists.

A lawsuit by a legal watchdog was filed Monday against the U.S. government over the surge in warrantless searches of laptops and cellphones of travelers to the U.S., including citizens, which has amounted to more than 5,000 searches in February alone and seems to disproportionately target Muslims and those traveling from Muslim-majority countries.
