US Counterterrorism Strategy Puts New Focus on Iran and Proxies

The Trump administration is giving greater priority to Iran and radical groups it backs in a new US counterterrorism strategy document released on Thursday that further increases the pressure from Washington on Tehran, Reuters reports.
The strategy, unveiled by National Security Adviser John Bolton, is the first issued since 2011 when the Obama administration’s view of counterterrorism was focused almost exclusively on the threat posed by al Qaeda after the death of its founder, Osama bin Laden.

Bolton: US Will Be “Aggressive and Unwavering” on Iran Sanctions

White House national security adviser John Bolton on Tuesday dismissed an EU plan for a special payments plan to circumvent US sanctions against Iranian oil sales and pressed the SWIFT global payments messaging system to rethink dealing with Tehran, Reuters reports.
Speaking at a conference, Bolton also said the United States would be “aggressive and unwavering” in enforcing economic sanctions on Iran that are resuming after Washington withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. He said the United States would not allow the European Union or anyone else to undermine them.
