Once it became clear to the Israeli government that their European friends were not buying the claim that these human rights organizations are connected to terrorism, and would refuse to stop funding them, Israel pulled out the “big gun” and designated them as “terrorist organizations.”

While Bush rushed to designate the Holy Land Foundation a terrorist organization and declare that closing them down was somehow a great achievement in the fight against terrorism, the fact of the matter was that he had no proof.

The Holy Land Foundation case, on which I based my book “Injustice, The Story of the Holy Land Foundation,” included five defendants, all of whom were wrongfully charged and wrongfully convicted. The five, Mufid Abdulqader, Shukri Abu Baker, Ghassan Elashi, Abdulrahman Odeh, and Mohammad Elmezain, were targeted because they were Palestinian Muslims. The U.S.

The nomination of John Ratcliffe to the post of U.S. Director of National Intelligence, though ultimately withdrawn, has brought new light to the Holy Land Foundation case, a case in which Ratcliffe claims to have had a hand. It was disturbing to hear Ratcliffe brag about his role in the case, a case that saw five innocent men charged with and convicted of crimes they did not commit. It was almost equally disturbing that those who opposed him did so because he did not, as he claimed, play a significant part in this injustice — that he had, in effect, padded his resume.

On December 4, 2001, less than three months after 9/11, President George W. Bush issued Executive Order 13224, which designated Holy Land Foundation (HLF) as a terrorist organization. On February 27, 2002, the Wall Street Journal quoted Bush as having said:

 The “War on Terror” has likewise created a special circumstance that has liberated Justice Department dogmatists: Islamophobes, Zionists, neoconservatives and others who fancy themselves on a special mission to protect the nation from evil and conspiratorial forces.
