Hate Crime Hoax

The city of Chicago is suing Smollett for the cost of overtime that the police department incurred while investigating the hoax. The actor counter-sued for malicious prosecution. Smollett is due to appear in court on Webb’s charges on February 24.

Officers obtained information from Samitt's cellphone health application that was synced to his Apple Watch, confirming he lied. Samitt then admitted to intentionally stabbing himself. He has been charged with falsely reporting a felony, which carries a potential sentence of four years.

The three owners of the BerMax kosher cafe were arrested after calling the police and claiming that the female owner was assaulted and that the business was spray-painted with hate-related graffiti by attackers.

Authorities claim the two attackers, who are black, have confessed to their role in the hoax after Smollett paid them $3,500 to stage the incident. Smollett may also face federal charges for mail fraud on allegations that he mailed a hate speech letter to himself.

Chicago police raided the home of two Nigerian brothers who had appeared on the Empire TV series and know Smollett. Police collected bleach, shoes, electronics, receipts and other items from their home.

New York: Police charged Adwoa Lewis, 19, with making a false written statement in addition to falsely accusing four Trump-supporting teenagers of slashing her tires and leaving her a note that told her to "go home."

Odessa, Texas: Khalil Cavil, 20, a server at Saltgrass Steakhouse, claimed that customers with a bill of more than $108 refused to leave him a tip and wrote on the receipt, "We don't tip terrorists."  Several days later, Cavil admitted he wrote the note and that it was a hoax, but gave no reason for his actions.
