MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA — Press TV — the Iranian government-funded TV news outlet — has been “shut down” on Google’s platforms, including YouTube and Gmail. The move coincides with similar action taken against HispanTV, an Iranian Spanish-language channel. With increasing repression of Iran’s official vehicles of communication to the world, the country’s voice is stifled in front of international audiences — and that’s the goal.
A federal judge indicated on Thursday that she will approve a preliminary settlement between Google and users whose email content was scanned for advertising purposes.
“I intend to grant preliminary approval for the settlement in this case,” U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh during a hearing Thursday afternoon.
At the heart of the case is Google’s practice of intercepting emails sent to Gmail customers, and scanning the content of those emails for two purposes — weeding out spam content and for targeted advertising.

The US National Security Agency is collecting hundreds of millions of contact lists from personal email and instant messaging accounts around the world, according to a new report.
Many of the contacts belong to American citizens, The Washington Post reports, citing senior intelligence officials and documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.
