Chipotle Mexican Grill is facing hard times again after hundreds of people reportedly fell ill after eating at one of their establishments in Powell, Ohio.
As of the morning of August 2, Delaware County health officials had received 413 inquiries from customers who said they were sickened after eating at the Powell location, according to Delaware County Health District information officer, Traci Whittaker.

“Our staff has been fielding calls all day long yesterday, so what happens when we get calls is we have to follow up and investigate.”

If it seems like this summer has brought about food recall after food recall, well, you’re not wrong. A great many products have been pulled from shelves in the past few months, most of them vegetables. It seems that foodborne illness is on the rise, in general. [1]

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Thursday that 9 people in Minnesota and Wisconsin had been diagnosed with E. coli poisoning, including 2 individuals who had to be hospitalized, but have since recovered. The source of the outbreak has been traced back to alfalfa sprouts from Jack & The Green Sprouts in River Falls, Wisconsin.
The CDC said in an announcement:

Chipotle’s locations across the country shut down on Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to tune into a livestream from Denver to hear executives discuss their plans for preventing future food poisoning outbreaks.

Health officials have linked a 7-state salmonella outbreak to Garden of Life meal replacement shakes. The Minnesota Department of Health says at least 8 people have been sickened.

Chipotle had a rough year last year. The Mexican restaurant chain contended with multiple food poisoning and norovirus outbreaks, and the company’s stocks took a beating. Now, the company wants to thank loyal customers and regain the confidence of others through freebies.

Listeria has been found lurking in the Brenham, Texas facility that produces Blue Bell ice cream, a southern favorite that was pulled from shelves in April 2015 when at least 10 people were sickened with listeria, including 3 people who died.

No one can argue that 2015 was a rough year for Chipotle. Five outbreaks of foodborne illness have struck the Mexican restaurant franchise since October, giving a bad reputation to a food chain that is going the route of healthy and GMO-free (at least on the surface).
