Michigan used to be a reliably Republican state. Michiganders picked native son Jerry Ford over Carter in 1976, Reagan both times he ran and the George H.W. Bush over Dukakis in 1988 but in 1992 the state started turning-- and voting-- blue. Bill Clinton beat George H.W. Bush and then Dole; Bush II lost there both times he ran and then Obama won both times he ran.

I've been talking to an increasing number of progressive candidates for Congress who have told me that they have no intention of voting for Pelosi as speaker in 2021. Nancy Pelosi, who has great taxpayer-funded health insurance and has a net worth of $120 million, doesn't understand what Medicare does for people; why should she? Since I started getting it, I've been shocked when I talk with members of Congress who are absolutely clueless about the massive-- and massively important-- program they fund. It's time for Pelosi to move along. Didn't she promise to give up the speaker's gavel?
A new poll from Morning Consult has some not so great news for Mayo Pete. Between October 25 and 28, pollsters asked registered voters a number of questions. Some were very standard, like Trump's job approval-- 55% disapprove (43% strongly) and 43% approve, and like who they would vote for if the election was today-- 39% Trump and 52% someone other than Trump. Individual matchups showed both Biden and Bernie beating Trump, but not Buttigieg.
I left the U.S. in 1969. The idea of Nixon being the president was too much for my 20 year old sensibilities. I traveled the world and eventually wound up living in Amsterdam. While I was in Afghanistan my sensibilities were further assaulted while a northern Democrat, Louise Day Hicks-- from Boston no less-- ran on a racist platform and was elected to Congress. She only remained for two years before being defeated by a non-racist Democrat.
Bernie did really well in Detroit Sunday afternoon. The audience was very enthusiastic as he explained the platform he was running on. And one of the planks he spoke about was marijuana legalization. His key points:

Not all Democrats are the same. Filling Congress with garden variety Democrats isn't even a good idea. It would just enable the worst instincts of the worst power-mad, values-free careerist Democrats, the Schumers, Emanuels, Bidens, Bustoses and Hoyers. Trump is an existential threat to our democracy and our nation. He's got to be dealt with.
