He scared Buck McKeon so deeply that McKeon retired from Congress and is now working as a lobbyist. Even after McKeon raised the white flag, Steve Israel and the dysfunctional operation he's turned the DCCC into still managed to screw up the race, leaving Democrats without a candidate.
CO-06 was redrawn some years ago as a true swing district. It snakes around the southern, western and northen suburbs of Denver and includes Aurora, Littleton and Centennial. Long a prime Democratic target, the PVI D+1 district is represented by Mike Coffman, who is far too right ideologically for the moderate district.
Last week was a good one for the White House between the Supreme Court decisions on Obamacare, same-sex marriage, and redistricting and Obama's success in getting enough conservative, corporately owned Democrats-- primarily New Dems-- to vote with the GOP to pass Wall Street's trade agenda (Fast Track, as a prelude to TPP).
If you've been following Jason Ritchie's twitter feed, you're following the most active struggle against Fast Track in the state of Washington, Fast Track that sacrifices $700 million in Medicare to grease the skids and Fast Track that is being pushed by Republican incumbent Dave Reichert. Obama won WA-08 both times, by almost 15,000 against McCain and by close to 5,000 against Romney. Both of Washington’s Democratic senators, Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, also won WA-08.
With Janice Hahn leaving Congress to pursue election to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, a deal was struck to give the seat to crooked, lobbyist-owned state Senator and Big Oil shill Isadore Hall. Virtually the entire California Democratic Establishment has endorsed Hall; exceptions include progressive Congressmembers Linda Sánchez, Lucille Roybal-Allard and Ruben Gallego, plus L.A.
New York's 24th Congressional District-- basically Syracuse plus a chunk of central New York from Oswego to the Finger Lakes to Rochester's eastern suburbs-- turned blue in the '90s. The PVI is D+1 and Obama beat McCain 56-42% and then beat Romney by an even greater margin, 57-41%. The Democratic congressman, Dan Maffei, was a wishy-washy New Dem who never embraced core progressive values and tended to vote with the GOP on crucial roll calls too frequently for grassroots Dems to countenance.
Writing for Stars and Stripes and the Washington Post Sunday, Anne Kim, an operative for Wall Street's deceptively named Progressive Policy Institute (a pro-corporate/anti-worker New Dem outfit that was founded by the DLC to promote neoliberal ideas like NAFTA and the TPP), decries how much more it costs reactionary Democrats-- New Dems and Blue Dogs-- to run for election than it costs real Democrats.
