Syria’s strong ties with Russia helped it win back Aleppo and agree to a nation-wide ceasefire earlier this week [PPIO]
Syrian president Bashar al-Assad has told Russian officials that the victory of his forces in Aleppo has proven to be a turning point in the war against terrorism in Syria.
Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Federation Council’s International Affairs Committee, met with Assad on Wednesday and told Russian media on his return to Moscow yesterday that the Syrian leadership believes the military victory in Aleppo and diplomatic initiatives since then will go a long way to stabilizing the country and the region, and aid in the fight against Islamic radicalism.
Two weeks ago, Syrian forces recaptured the strategic city of Aleppo and facilitated the evacuation of tens of thousands of civilians from the wartorn region.
Earlier this week, the Syrian government participated in negotiations with its Russian allies and Turkey to ensure the implementation of a nationwide ceasefire followed by talks on the future of the country.
Despite accusations of violations, the ceasefire has been holding for two days.
The nationwide ceasefire in Syria, the first of its kind to include the whole country, brokered by Turkey and Russia and agreed upon by the Syrian government and major anti-Assad groups not linked to the Islamic State and Al Nusra front, came into force at midnight local time Thursday.
It has been endorsed by European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and many others.
