California cops shot a man with a knife Sunday who was barking at them while standing in traffic and yelling the word “bulldog.”
“His behavior was outside of the norm,” Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.
The Fresno police officer shot him twice in the abdomen, but the man survived and is recovering at a local hospital after undergoing surgery.
Police say there is body cam footage as well as footage from a traffic camera of the shooting, but videos have not yet been released.
One witness told local media the cop shot him while backing up from the man swinging the knife.

As police were staging the shooting area, a woman driver plowed through two parked police cars in what appears to be an unrelated incident.
She was not shot but detained for possible intoxication but that has not been confirmed yet.
According to the Fresno Bee:
Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer said an officer arrived to Fresno Street and Belmont Avenue about 4 minutes after a call was made of a man threatening people in traffic with a knife around 4:10 p.m.
For about 40 seconds, the responding officer gave the man in his early 20s, dressed in red shorts and shirt, around 15 to 20 commands to drop the knife, Dyer said. The man continued to approach cars in the area and was about a car-length away from the officer when the officer fired twice, hitting the man in the abdomen. He was in surgery Sunday evening and was reported in stable condition.
Police said the man, whose name has not been released, was possibly a member of the Fresno Bulldog street gang, a Mexican street gang that wears mostly red and mainly is involved with the street distribution of marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine.
However, the local college football team out of Fresno State are also known as the Bulldogs.
Sunday’s shooting was the eighth so far this year by Fresno police.
In June, they shot and killed an unarmed 19-year-old man named Dylan Noble after saying he could have been the same man a caller reported walking down the street wearing camouflage and carrying a rifle.
UPDATE: A man who recorded video of the shooting gave the footage to Fox 26, which posted it on their site tonight.
The video shows the man with the knife on the other side of a car that is stopped on an inside lane while the cop is standing in front of the car with this gun drawn, walking towards the man with the knife, yelling “drop it.”
The cop then fires two shots.
Contrary to what the chief said Sunday, the man with the knife did not appear to come towards the cop “very quickly.”
After the shooting, one witness asks, “why didn’t he tase him?”
And another witness responds, “he should have dropped it.”
Police have not released the man’s name but say he was 25 years old with an “extensive criminal history.”
Police say the cop was wearing a body cam and there is also footage from a traffic camera. Also, another person can be heard in this video saying they also recorded the shooting, so we will post the new footage as it comes up.
