A North Carolina sheriff’s deputy has been fired after she shot her daughter at a Halloween party over the weekend, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.
Misty Michelle Flowers, 38, was showing her department-issued service weapon to friends at her home in Lincolnton Saturday when she negligently fired the gun.
The bullet tore through a wall, striking her daughter in the next room.

“I find gross negligence and the disregard for the safety of others was displayed in the incident Saturday night and therefore Officer Flowers was terminated today,” said Sheriff David Carpenter

“This is totally separate from the SBI investigation into the incident that occurred at her residence.”
Lincoln County deputies were called to Flowers’ home around 11:23 p.m. and began issuing medial aid to the girl’s injuries. The child was transported to CHS-Lincoln then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte to undergo surgery.
Deputies said the young girl was shot in the abdomen, but was in stable condition after treatment.
According to neighbors, Flowers was having a Halloween party at the time she shot her daughter.
Flowers had been with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Since 2015. Before that, she worked at the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.
“During this entire situation my focus has been on the well-being and condition of the child involved and am of the understanding the child is going to be ok after the surgery. This is a very tragic situation for all involved, the officer, her family, her career and everyone that has been touched by this,” Chief Carpenter said.
“We continue to pray for healing of the child and the entire family as the investigation continues over the next several days.”
