It is all fun and games until someone gets hurt. A police captain in Wichita, Kansas got angered at a female teenage referee and ran on the game court deciding to take matters into his own hands.
And it was all caught on video, as seen here.
Now the Wichita police captain has been arrested for battery and disorderly conduct.
KWCH 12 reports that the incident occurred on January 13 at a youth league basketball game in which Captain Kevin Mears shoved a 17-year-old girl refereeing the game.
Mears didn’t agree with a call and ran on to the court to grab his son off the court, but the teenage referee blew the whistle to alert Mears to leave the court. Angered at the teen referee for doing her job, Mears decided to push the young girl.
The teenage ref then ordered Mears off the court yelling, “Get out, get out!” Mears yells back shouting, “Get out of my way.”
It appears Mears can dish out orders, but can’t take them.
In a statement, Augusta City Prosecutor Benjamin Winters said:
“The case was investigated by the Augusta Department of Public Safety. The investigation included numerous witness statements as well as video evidence. I would stress that at this point these charges are merely allegations, and Mr. Mears is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty”
The Wichita police Department released this statement:
“In accordance with a new directive Mears remains on unpaid leave pending the outcome of criminal proceedings and an internal review. According to policy we will review the incident to determine if department policies were violated, after the completion of the criminal proceedings.”
Mears is the head of the Wichita Police Department’s East Patrol bureau. Mears is now on unpaid leave. He faces a first court appearance on both charges at 1 p.m. Feb. 13.
