Eric Draitser of StopImperialism.org provides his analysis of recent comments made by the nominee for Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford. Draitser argues that such rhetoric reflects both a realistic assessment of the fact that, unlike other countries, Russia can actually defend itself against potential US aggression, but also a tacit admission of the failure of US policy in Ukraine. Draitser explains that such comments are designed to justify escalation of the conflict in Ukraine because the US recognizes that it has been unsuccessful in creating a NATO colony on Russia’s border, and has been unable to draw Moscow into a military quagmire in its neighbor.
