Burned Atlanta toddler spotlights spike in SWAT raids …
The severe burning of a 19-month-old toddler could accomplish what the unnecessary killing of a 92-year-old woman couldn’t – reining in the use of no-knock warrants by SWAT teams in Georgia.

Yesterday there was all kinds of commotion on the right from a hum drum post about Sean Eldridge firing his campaign manager and the quality of assistance his campaign gets from Steve Israel.

To the editor:
I write in agreement with the following statement from the June 20 editorial in the Greenwood Commonwealth titled "Right criticism, wrong critic": "Former Vice President Dick Cheney isn’t the best person to criticize President Obama’s foreign policy, or the lack thereof."

I should not badmouth Stratfor. Granted, their star has dimmed a tad in the last few years, but they email me news articles every day or two gratis so who am I to quibble.
I especially love the cozy, your one of us, insider tone of the articles. It may be ridiculous, but who cares? It’s fun for the space of a few hundred words to pretend you’re a select recipient of special intelligence.

Unsurprisingly, one hears little to no news of Gaza these days, and utterly distorted news on Palestine in general. The ongoing manufactured crises that the 1.8 million Palestinians of Gaza have been suffering since at least 2006 is old news, their misery only now and then newsworthy.

What's wrong with voters who allow themselves to be suckered by conservative politicians?I was listening to an amazing broadcast on KCRW the other night. It was a discussion between an anchor who didn't know it was amazing and a beat reporter who was just as clueless. The reporter was babbling to the anchor about how 6 officials of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department were convicted of obstructing a federal probe into violence against inmates in county jails.

After a brief holiday last week, I returned to some heavy reading courtesy of the federal government. Some of the materials that I read were gratifying, and one was terrifying. In one week, the Supreme Court told the police that if they want to examine the contents of our cellphones, whether at traffic stops or […]
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko – by thumbing his nose at the leaders of Russia, Germany and France as they repeatedly appealed to him to renew the fragile ceasefire in eastern Ukraine – has left himself and his U.S. patrons isolated, though that’s not the version of the story that you’ll read in the mainstream U.S. […]
One of the easiest ways to confirm that there is no difference between (mainstream) Republicans and Democrats is to compare the latter’s vision of perfectible economic meddling with the former’s right-wing dreamworld of international democracy and low, low oil prices. Now, even a statement this general requires caveats. In the last two weeks, Democrat prez […]
UK Methodists sidestepped a proposal to “strengthen the Church’s commitment to Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) as a peaceful and effective method to persuade the State of Israel to end its military occupation of the Palestinian territories… by applying BDS to Israel in addition to the illegal settlements”. And they did so on a day when Israelis were ramping up their wildly disproportionate murder spree and collective punishment against Palestinians
There's supposed to be this huge chasm in the Maine Republican Party between the business-oriented moderates and the far right extremists (with another split in their for the Ron Paul libertarian branch). The moderates have been the home base for respectable political leaders like Senators Margaret Chase Smith, Bill Cohen, Olympia Snowe.

Supposed allies fought allies today in Iraq. The Shi'ite-led government tried to arrest a Shi'ite cleric, but they only managed to have a violent clash with his followers. Meanwhile, Naqshabandiya Army militants fought with ISIS/DAASH members. Although the two militant groups have tried to combine forces, they frequently quarrel. Overall, at least 138 people were killed and 75 more were wounded across Iraq.
Palestinian teen murdered: Muhammad Hussein Abu Khdeir was walking to morning prayers for Ramadan after 3 a.m. Wednesday morning when a car pulled up and a number of passengers forced him in. Police later found his burned body in a Jerusalem-area forest. Speculation that the killing was a nationalistically motivated and perpetrated by Jewish Israelis as revenge .

Republicans got rid of their head of corrupt practices; the Democrats haven'tSomeone-- or a few someones-- must be responsible for the rules change that allows Members of Congress to take bribes in the form of lobbyist-sponsored travel without reporting it on financial disclosure forms. I read about the "rules change" and how "it happened" and how it has "occurred behind closed doors." But nowhere does it say who was behind those closed doors.
Bipartisan criticism of the Export-Import Bank is all the rage these days, after new Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy spoke publicly about his intention to end its very existence. From the standpoint of a libertarian, the criticism and the shedding of light on such a blatant corporate welfare scheme should be welcome news. Even a lot of mainstream media outlets have latched on to this populist issue du jour.

http://youtu.be/Tg8riylNBrsEric Draitser of StopImperialism.org provides his analysis of the recent arrest of two US citizens on charges of “perpetrating hostile acts” against the country. He explains that, though the US has provided no specific information regarding what these men were doing in the country, there is a mountain of historical evidence showing espionage and destabilization of Pyongyang by the CIA and other intelligence agencies. Draitser notes that similar incidents have occurred in places like Venezuela, Bolivia, Iran, and Cuba.
Russia has demanded an investigation into claims that chemical and phosphorus weapons have been used by Ukrainian troops. People showing symptoms of chlorine poisoning were admitted to hospital following an alleged attack carried out by Ukrainian Special Forces near Slavyansk, according to separatist forces. Earlier, there were accusations of phosphorus firebombs being dropped on villages in southeastern Ukraine, accompanied by video footage.
Constantin Costa-Gavras' 1982 film, Missing, had some pretty big stars-- including Jack Lemmon, Charles Cioffi and Sissy Spacek-- and won some pretty big awards-- including the Palme d'Or at Cannes for best male actor and the Academy Award for best writing-- and had a hugely acclaimed score by Vangelis, but there's a good chance you never saw it-- nor read the Tom Hauser book it was based on, The Execution of Charles Horman: An American Sacrifice. That's because Henry Kissinger didn't want anyone to see that film or read that book.
