June 2010, 15-year old Sergio Hernandez was playing a game with his friends in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico when a U.S. Border Patrol officer Jesus Mesa shot him in the face, killing him instantly. Mesa fired from El Paso, Texas on the American side of the border into Mexico. In court, he claimed that the teenage boy had attacked him, pelting him with stones, and he feared for his life. Video footage of the incident, however, clearly contradicted his account.

At a press conference on January 6, he said the neoliberal model had failed; private banks were not serving the poor and people outside the cities, so the government had to step in.

Indigenous people, environmental and human rights activists remain at risk of assassination in Latin America. In Nicaragua, 6 indigenous people were killed by settlers as the struggle over land continues. The indigenous communities have complained of government inaction over the settlers’ seizing of land and violence, expressing fear of extermination.

Oscar Simei López Castillo, 13, died after armed men, believed to be drug-cartel members, crashed into their vehicle and opened fire on them in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The highway on which they were traveling was a stretch of road that rival drug gangs are fighting each other to control.

From the far distance sounded the muffled howling of a family of monkeys, monos gritones, passing the night in the crowns of the mighty trees.
