“At our request, the OSCE mission is demanding a meeting with the journalists, but the Kiev authorities forbid them from doing,” Kelin told ITAR-TASS news agency.

Earlier this afternoon in Washington, the Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. Senate approved 13 to 2 the “Venezuelan Human Rights and Democracy Protection Act.” The bill includes sanctions on key individuals of the Venezuelan government and at least $15 million to “defend human rights… and strengthen the rule of law.”

Syrian special forces have broken the siege of Aleppo Central Prison, according to a correspondent with Al-Manar News. The sprawling facility has been under siege by foreign militants for over a year. For the past number of days, Syrian forces have bombarded terrorist positions on the outskirts of the prison. Today, elite troops broke through to the prison, providing the garrison with food and ammunition.

CA-33 is a blue, blue district encompassing iconic California dreamscapes like Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu, Beverly Hills, Westwood, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo… a canvas for a David Hockney painting-- or a Beach Boys career. One of the most well-educated congressional districts in the country, it isn't friendly to the Republican message. The PVI is D+11 and McCain only managed 34% in 2008 while Romney took 37% in 2012.

When a sexually assaulted American citizen can be falsely arrested for assaulting a police officer, brought to trial by a corrupt prosecutor whose false case is endorsed by a corrupt judge and convicted by an insouciant jury, you know that justice is dead in America.
Just because Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch don’t recognize the U.N. Charter or the Kellogg Briand Pact is not a reason for us not to. Laws don’t work that way. Laws remain law until they are repealed. These laws have not been. If a memo can make a murder part of a war and therefore legal, we are obliged to ask: What makes the war legal?

On 2 May 2014, there was a massacre that was initially reported as being of 116 anti-Kiev (or independence) demonstrators at the Trade Unions Building in Odessa. The latest reliable report (from an American, George Eliason, who lives in that area) indicates it to be instead “now counted at 272 people that were tortured, gassed …, bludgeoned, …, etc.,” above and beyond the numbers who had been incinerated there by the firebombing of the building. Western news-media unfortunately seem to be doing all they can to keep the public ignorant of what went on there, and of why.

Yesterday, Grayson told Brett Logiurato at Business Insider that the Republicans are "scandalmongers without a scandal.
A year ago, on May 23, 2013, I was in the audience at the National Defense University when President Barack Obama gave his major foreign policy address. Having worked for years trying to close the Guantanamo prison and stop US drone attacks, I was crushed to realize that the president’s speech was ending and he had not announced any significant change of course on either policy. My heart was pounding with fear.
Eva Illouz, a professor of sociology at Hebrew University, published an article in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz entitled, “Is It Possible to Be a Jewish Intellectual?” In this piece she sets forth two opposing positions: one is the Zionist/Israeli demand for the primacy of “ahavat Israel,” or the “love of the Jewish nation and people” – the claim that all Jews have a “duty of the heart” to be loyal to the “Jewish nation.” The other position is that of the lone i

Early 20th century writer Franz Kafka was known for creating unsettling stories of characters set upon by unseen forces, caught in the labyrinth of modern-day bureaucracy. A lawyer by training, this sense of angst is perhaps best exemplified in his famous novel, The Trial, in which a man is charged with an unnamed transgression by an unknown accuser in an unofficial parallel court system that begins to take over his entire life. This is the essence of the Kafkaesque.

It’s just a coincidence that Gen. Khalifa Hifter (sometimes spelled Hiftar) launched his Libyan coup only four days after the US deployed 200 troops to Sicily – a "crisis response team" sent at the State Department’s request. Another coincidence: US-backed Gen. Hifter lived in Washington, D.C. for decades, a few convenient miles from the CIA’s […]
Although the Nigerian radical Islamist group Boko Haram has long made even the al Qaeda groups look moderate – slaughtering entire villages and shooting or burning to death 59 school boys – it apparently took the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls to get the world’s attention, including that of America and Britain. I hope you read VA-08 resident Pachacutec's very detailed rundown of the candidates running in his northern Virginia district. Although he found more than one well-qualified candidate, he came to the conclusion that Patrick Hope was the best candidate overall and the best candidate to beat the heavily financed conservative Establishment Democrat, Don Beyer. That was back in April. Today marked 3 weeks out from the election and the race has had time to develop.

Washington has failed to condemn the detention of Russian journalists working in Ukraine, instead doubting they were journalists at all and accusing them of smuggling weapons based on a “reports and conversations” on the ground.
The US State Department claims that Russian journalists were in possession of press accreditation that was given to them by the self-proclaimed Donetsk republic, which Ukraine and the US do not recognize.
The EU policy of maintaining close relations with Israel as a supposed means of persuading it to end its violations of human rights and international law, and negotiate in good faith, has clearly failed.

The number of American extremists who have flocked to Syria is higher than previously understood, American intelligence sources say. And some of the fighters are coming home.
Western intelligence services have been warning that European and American jihadists have been flocking to Syria to fight. But they’ve been reluctant to say how many Americans have joined the extremist forces there–until now. The latest U.S. intelligence estimates say that more than 100 Americans have joined the jihad in Syria to fight alongside Sunni terrorists there.
The US Central Intelligence Agency has ranked Israel as the third most aggressive “intelligence service” working against the United Sates, a leaked document shows.
This month I've been talking with Fred Kundrata, the Democratic candidate running for the Cincinnati-based seat that Steve Chabot lost in 2008 to Steve Driehaus, who ran as a progressive, and then regained 2 years later after Driehaus had amassed a conservative record at the behest of the DCCC. OH-01 was gerrymandered in 2010 to make the district much less hospitable to Democrats.
China gives Putin a diplomatic boost Weird headline? Why not- "China gives Russia a diplomatic boost"? Do you think there is
