U.S. Judge Orders Iran to Pay $6bn to Victims of 9/11 Attacks

U.S. District Judge George B. Daniels of the Southern District of New York ordered Iran to pay more than $6bn to victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks – despite the fact that The 9/11 Commission’s official investigation found no evidence of Iranian involvement.
Monday’s ruling in the “Thomas Burnett, Sr., et al. v. The Islamic Republic of Iran, et al” case found Iran “liable for the deaths of more than 1,000 people as a result of the September 11 attacks,” Al Jazeera reports:

Iran is ordered to pay “$12,500,000 per spouse, $8,500,000 per parent, $8,500,000 per child, and $4,250,000 per sibling” to the families and estates of the deceased, court filings say.

Judge Daniels’ decision was a default judgement – meaning the defendant, Iran, did not contest the case in court. Daniels has also issued default judgements against Iran in 2011 and 2016, according to Al Jazeera.
The judge’s official order can be read in its original filing form here on the Southern District of New York’s cases server.
This latest stunt seems to be part of a wider campaign to isolate and demonize Iran, in preparation for a military strike by the U.S. and Israel. It’s a near identical replay of the strategy deployed in advance of the illegal war waged against Iraq.
What will a war with Iran look like? What will be the results of a unilateral attack on Iran by Israel and the U.S.? Will it trigger multi-regional military conflict?
