Statement by NATO Secretary General on the so called elections in South Ossetia, Georgia
NATO does not recognise the election held on 8 June in the Georgian region of South Ossetia.
This election does not contribute to a peaceful and lasting settlement of the situation in Georgia. NATO Allies do not recognise the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions of Georgia as independent states.
Allied defence ministers on 4 June reiterated their full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.

Statement by the NATO Secretary General on the inauguration of President Poroshenko
On behalf of the North Atlantic Alliance, I warmly congratulate Petro Poroshenko on his inauguration as the President of Ukraine. I wish him every success in carrying forward this new position of responsibility at a defining time in Ukraine’s history.
The presidential elections were an important milestone for Ukraine. In holding transparent and democratic elections despite significant challenges, the people of Ukraine showed their commitment to a united, independent and sovereign country.
I am confident that President Poroshenko’s leadership will contribute to the stabilisation of the country, building on the inclusive political dialogue launched ahead of the elections. NATO remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its wide-ranging reforms within the framework of the NATO-Ukraine Commission. We are currently finalising further comprehensive measures to assist Ukraine and support reforms in the country’s security and defence sector.
Ukraine is a long-standing and active NATO partner, and we look forward to working with President Poroshenko. NATO Allies stand firm in their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
