(ANTIMEDIA)  — With tensions once again flaring up between the United States and North Korea, it was reported Tuesday that former U.S. president Jimmy Carter has offered to meet with leader Kim Jong-un to discuss ways to achieve peace.

America has had a tense post-Cold War relationship with North Korea, to put it mildly. Every US President from George H.W. Bush to Donald Trump has had difficulty in one form or another with North Korea, usually due to America’s lumbering aggressive posture towards Pyongyang. But throughout the post-Cold War period, one former US President has been what can only be described as a lone voice of reason and balance on the issue. That man is of course, Jimmy Carter who first entered the White House in 1977 before leaving after one term.

Former US President Jimmy Carter repeated his assertion that the US works more like an “oligarchy than a democracy,” while also lambasting Trump’s “hopeless” approach to the increasing tensions with North Korea.

Speaking at a ‘Conversation with the Carters’ event, Jimmy Carter said…

“The first thing I would do is treat the North Koreans with respect.”
“I know what the North Koreans want,” he said.
“What they want is a firm treaty guaranteeing North Korea that the US will not attack them or hurt them in any way, unless they attack one of their neighbors.” Carter said,
“But the United States has refused to do that.”

Former president bemoans money in politics and says tensions with Pyongyang won’t subside until “we’re willing to talk to them and treat them with respect as human beings.”
