Amy Palmer of York, Pennsylvania, recently posted a picture that went viral of her husband sleeping under their 20-month-old son’s crib in the York Hospital Pediatrics unit after the son had suffered a severe asthma attack. Andre Palmer crawled underneath his son’s cot after working a full night’s shift, not missing a beat to be with his son.
His wife stated that she thinks her husband deserves the “Father of the Year” award for taking time to be with his son after a hard day’s work.
Underneath the photo, which has been shared over 4,000 times and received over 17,000 likes, Amy wrote:
“This is a picture of a hard working man dedicated to his family!! After working all night third shift, he’s right here with his son who is in the hospital. He’s so tired but he’s here!! Father of the year award goes to Andre Palmer!!! I love you more than words baby.”
The photo was also shared on the Facebook page Love What Really Matters, where it garnered even more attention than the original post.
Palmer said that her son was placed in a hospital room that could only fit the crib and a little chair that could turn into a bed for guests. Her husband, who had just dropped their daughter off at daycare, was so tired that he simply crashed underneath the crib without waking up his wife who had fallen asleep on the the chair-cum-bed. Palmer emphasized that the hospital staff was amazing and knew they would have offered him a place to rest his head had they known he was sleeping underneath the crib.
After seeing what her husband was doing, Palmer quickly got up from her slumber and helped her husband into the cot for a more comfortable rest. But of course, not before snapping the quick photo on her cell phone.
She wrote in a follow-up post on Facebook:
“I took the picture because I thought what a selfless thing for my husband to do. He could have went home after work, he could have asked me to get up.”
The Palmers have said they have been overwhelmed by the kind words and messages received in the wake of the viral photo.
