Poroshenko could stabilize situation in Ukraine – NATO secretary general
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said he is confident that Petro Poroshenko’s assuming the post of the new president of Ukraine will facilitate the speedy settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
“I am confident that President Poroshenko’s leadership will contribute to the stabilisation of the country, building on the inclusive political dialogue launched ahead of the elections,” he said in a statement issued on Saturday.
Rasmussen said that “NATO remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its wide-ranging reforms within the framework of the NATO-Ukraine Commission.”
“Ukraine is a long-standing and active NATO partner, and we look forward to working with President Poroshenko. NATO Allies stand firm in their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity,” he said.
Rasmussen, on behalf of the North Atlantic Alliance, congratulated Poroshenko on his inauguration as the president of Ukraine and wished him “every success in carrying forward this new position of responsibility at a defining time in Ukraine’s history.”
On Saturday, Poroshenko took the oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people and was officially inaugurated as president of Ukraine.
