Huawei begins making smartphones in India

This comes as a boost to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious “Make in India” campaign.
The plant will be operated with the Indian arm of electronics manufacturer Flextronics International Ltd in Chennai, Huawei said in a statement.
Indian Information and Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad launched the Huawei manufacturing unit in New Delhi on Friday.

A Huawei press statement said the plant will have the capacity to make three million units by the end of 2017.
The Chinese firm will also expand its Indian retail network, increasing to more than 50,000 the number of outlets it partners with by the end of the year.
“We have been present in India for the last 16 years and as part of our India focus, we have been consistently expanding our footprint in the market. This year especially has been of significance in our India journey,” Jay Chen, CEO of Huawei India said.
Huawei’s largest overseas R&D (Research and Development) Center is based in India.
In July this year, Huawei announced that its first half revenues were up 40 per cent, to $36.8 billion.
The Chinese giant is among the top makers of smartphones.
