Prince Andrew and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia have both had a bad week.
The Saudi military appears to have suffered an historic defeat with a Houthi trap capturing up to three Saudi brigades. Houthis claim 500 Saudi fighters killed and 2,000 Saudi fighters captured. Is this latest Saudi loss the end of the road for presumptive heir to the throne, Mohammad bin Salman?
It’s pretty clear. Saudi Arabia has lost, and, notes Bruce Riedel, “the Houthis and Iran are the strategic winners”. Saudi proxies in Aden – the seat of Riyadh’s Yemeni proto-‘government’ – have been turfed out by secular, former Marxist, southern secessionists. What can Saudi Arabia do? It cannot go forward. Even tougher would be retreat.
US President Donald Trump said his administration plans to stand by Saudi Arabia amid the Khashoggi crisis.
In a statement on Tuesday, Trump said he intends to maintain Washington’s strong ties to Saudi leaders, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS), despite the “unacceptable and horrible crime” committed against Jamal Khashoggi.

Frankly, this was not the first, and it will not be the last time that the American President Donald Trump insults the Saudi King, but we are a nation who is afflicted with forgetfulness. While the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited the US, the American President said, in a phone call to the Saudi King, “King, we’re protecting you. You might not be there for two weeks without us. You have to pay for your military; you have to pay.”
As Saudi Arabia’s Dictator-King Salman’s health deteriorates, rumors that the Dictator-King’s unhinged son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, will ascend to the thrown in the next few months are picking up steam.
It is widely believed that Mohammed bin Salman, has already been running the Wahhabi kingdom, pushing Saudi Arabia into wars in Syria and Yemen, as well as fueling tensions with neighbor Qatar.
