WASHINGTON — Despite being legally required to conduct audits since the early 90s and holding a staggering 2.2 trillion in assets, the Pentagon held its first-ever audit this week — which it, unsurprisingly, spectacularly failed.
After decades of waste, overpayments, trillions of missing dollars and, most recently, losing track of 44,000 soldiers, the Pentagon is about to undergo its first audit in history. In 2015 alone, a staggering $6.5 trillion was unaccounted for, with $2.8 trillion in 'wrongful adjustments' occurring in just one quarter. Corruption goes back to the 1980s when the Pentagon was buying $37 screws, $7,622 coffee makers, and $640 toilet seats.

The US military lost track of $1 billion worth of arms bound for Iraq and Kuwait, according to a US Department of Defense audit obtained by Amnesty International.
The government audit, from September 2016, reveals that the DoD “did not have accurate, up-to-date records on the quantity and location” of a vast amount of equipment pouring into Kuwait and Iraq to provision the Iraqi Army.
