An 18-month-old died in Palestine Friday. The cause of death was teargas inhalation from an Israeli invasion of his village two months ago.
It wasn’t a major invasion; just another of the routine ones that happen almost every day in the West Bank. U.S. media call these “incursions,” when they bother to mention them. Which is rarely.
The toddler’s name was Abdul-Rahman Mahmoud Barghouthi, a name that feels incongruously long for his short life.

In the age of globalization during the last quarter of the 20thcentury, the English language achieved global hegemony as the “lingua franca” for international communication. It is no small coincidence that during this same time, after the end of the Cold War, the US rose as the sole and dominant superpower with stated aims to achieve global hegemony.  Just as English was the language of the British Empire, so English retained its imperial role when the US Empire succeeded that of the British.

What do large, perennial media like the Washington Post, New York Times, CNN, FOX, NBC, etc. all have in common? A handful of wealthy financial backers. This is precisely why you never see them crowdfunding or running donation drives to help pay their writers or keep their lights on. The same goes for government-sponsored media like the BBC, France 24, Deutsche Welle, Al-Jazeera, and RT.
