The International Olympic Committee requires a transgender woman to show that she has been reducing her testosterone levels for one year in order to qualify to compete as a woman.
This criterion arises while an ongoing debate considers whether transgender women should be allowed to compete in women’s sports. Recently, Jaycee Cooper, a transgender powerlifter from Minnesota, won the state championship even though USA Powerlifting, a sports association, banned trans women from the sport. The Association argues that it is unfair to allow transgender women to compete with biological women because biological males are born naturally stronger even if they change to women, and therefore have an unfair advantage.
