Pushkov hopes to hear PACE assessment of materials on fight in Odesa sent to it by Russia
MOSCOW: The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) may assess the materials sent to PACE by Russia on Tuesday – pictures of burnt and shot victims of the clashes in Odesa on May 2, State Duma international affairs committee head Alexei Pushkov said.
“We have recently sent all pictures of burnt, strangled, beaten, shot, tortured, and assaulted people in the House of Unions in Odesa to PACE. Our colleagues promised to raise the issue so that the PACE leadership gives some response today at a presidential committee meeting in Luxembourg as to how they view these photographs,” Pushkov said at a Duma meeting on Tuesday.
“Is this the democracy the Western world proposes for Ukraine or is this something else?” Pushkov said. For now, PACE has been “shamefully silent,” he said.
“The PACE chairperson makes different incoherent and anti-Russian statements but does not speak about the mass burning of people in Odesa. I think this is absolutely unacceptable and we will talk about this in all international and domestic arenas,” Pushkov said.
Amid such conditions when sanctions should be passed against the Kyiv authorities, such measures are being taken against Russia, Pushkov said.
“What do they want from us? That we turn a blind eye to those who were burnt, killed and strangled in Odesa and Mariupol? We cannot do this. That we turn a blind eye to the results of the vote in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where several million people have declared their will? We cannot do this. That we recognize the illegitimate regime in Kyiv, which responds to the legitimate demands of own citizens by sending tanks and armored vehicles? We cannot do this. They want us to admit that black is white but we cannot do this,” Pushkov said.

Death toll from Odessa tragedy rises to 48
The death toll after the bloodshed in the Ukrainian Black Sea port city of Odessa has risen to 48, as an Odessa National University student died in hospital from a serious wound. Earlier on Sunday, one more man, Yevgeny Losinsky, 34, died in hospital from a serious stomach injury. As of now, about 60 people remain in hospitals, with ten still in grave conditions.

On Saturday, the authorities made public an updated list of 43 identified victims of the May 2 tragedy in Odessa. Eight died of gunshot wounds, seven people jumped out of the windows from upper floors of the burning Odessa Trade Unions House, escaping from the fire and pursuers, other people were burnt alive or suffocated to death in the burning building. According to the latest reports, 48 people died, more than 200 were wounded and 48 are still reported missing.
Meanwhile, member of the Ukrainian parliament, Oleg Tsarev, lawmaker of the Odessa regional council, Vadim Savenko and other Ukrainian politicians say that the clashes took the lives of at least 116 people while the Kiev authorities appear to be seeking to conceal the exact figures.
Rioting in Odessa began on May 2 when football fans arriving from Kharkov, eastern Ukraine, as well as activists from the radical Right Sector movement and members of the so-called Maidan self-defense forces from Kiev staged a march through city streets. The action culminated in clashes with supporters of Ukrainian federalization, during which radical activists set fire to the regional Trade Unions House and a tent camp on Kulikovo Pole Square, where activists were collecting signatures in favor of a federalization referendum and the offical status of the Russian language.
