His photographs document the story of a body staged to look like a crucifixion — and to send a message — in the northern Syrian city of Raqqa. An al Qaeda splinter group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), says the brutal display serves as a lesson to anyone who dares challenge its rule.
Three days on, the “crucified” body of the man and another victim were reportedly still hanging in Raqqa.
“What they are conveying is those who oppose ISIS rule oppose God’s rule, and those who are enemies of ISIS are enemies of God and deserve the highest form of punishment possible,” says Abbas Barzegar, assistant professor of Islamic studies at Georgia State University.

Abu Ibrahim, a member of a recently formed anti-ISIS activist group in Raqqa, says the remaining five victims were children under the age of 18, one of them a seventh-grade student.
The crucifixion displays began in March, when ISIS accused a shepherd of murder and theft, then shot him in the head and tied his lifeless body to a wooden cross. Video on social media showed the body leaning up against a small building painted to bear the group’s flag and name.
“Life here is very hard. People are tired and they hate everything. If you don’t close your shop during prayer time you get lashes, if you smoke you get lashed, if you say one wrong thing you can be executed. Just like that. It’s that easy for ISIS,” Abu Ibrahim says.
“So many families have had people disappear and they have no idea where they are or what happened to them. The worst part is people are too afraid to ask about their husbands or sons,” Abu Ibrahim says.
After nearly every Friday prayer, a few of these prisoners appear in a public roundabout where dozens of onlookers stand by as charges are hurriedly read and the sentences against the accused carried out, ranging from lashes to executions. Images of the harrowing scenes often circulate on social-media sites, sometimes posted by accounts claiming to be linked to the extremist group.
“It is like a waterfall of blood. There are more and more executions and now the children watch like they are used to it. It is a strange and exciting scene and they are not afraid to look,” Abu Ibrahim says.

Sky News obtains a video posted on a UK man’s Instagram account that shows jihadist rebels shooting dead a prisoner.

Footage uncovered by researchers at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) shows jihadist rebelskilling a prisoner, said to be a loyalist of President Bashar al Assad.
The incident is thought to have happened in the last two weeks near Raqqa in northern Syria.
The footage was posted on the Instagram account of a man believed to be from London.
The caption accompanying the video describes the prisoner as one of “Bashar [al Assad's] dogs” and says the killing was retribution for the deaths of four fellow rebels and the rape of a woman.
The ICSR monitors the social media accounts of hundreds of foreign fighters inside Syria.
They believe the man that posted the video is part of a group of British fighters, known as Rayat al Tawheed, an affiliate of the Sunni jihadi movement ISIS, which controls large swathes of northern Syria.
Shiraz Maher, a senior ICSR researcher based at King’s College London, said the killing of prisoners is a war crime in international law.
“It’s incredibly serious,” he said.
“We believe the main characters involved with Rayat al Tawheed come from London.
“We have deduced this based on our discussions with foreign fighters, our extensive record-keeping of foreign fighter activity in Syria, and our maintenance of social network maps which allows us to plot activity and associations in a visual form.”

Although no audible English is spoken in the video itself, analysts from the ICSR believe they have identified one of the gunmen as being a British citizen.
A man is seen in the video firing shots into the body of the prisoner in the seconds after the initial bullet was fired by the main shooter.
Analysis of the gunman’s physical build, wristwatch and balaclava led the ICSR to conclude he is the same man seen speaking English with a London accent in other videos posted by the group.
“We don’t know if the prisoner was alive or dead when he fired, but he did partake in the execution, he did fire shots at the individual from his weapon, and we believe he is a British citizen,” said ICSR researcher Joseph Carter.
On two separate videos posted on YouTube, the man identified as the gunman by the ICSR is heard berating the British Muslim community for failing to provide sufficient financial support for the jihad or the families the fighters have left behind.
“You know who you are, from the capital, the Midlands, up north, wherever you may be… it’s a disgrace, that brothers know where these wives are, where these families are, and yet you are buying your nephew or your child a PlayStation 4 or taking them out to Nando’s,” he said.
The Government’s counter-terrorism programme last week launched a campaign urging the families of young men planning to travel to Syria to intervene.
It is estimated that up to 400 Britons have travelled to fight or train in Syria in the last two years.

A Police Command source told SANA reporter that a group of armed terrorists intercepted the veterinarian’s car as he was driving along with his son and wife between the villages of Rami and al-Shreihi in the eastern countryside of the province.
The terrorists forced the family members to get off and opened fire on them, killing the father and his son and seriously injuring the mother, who was taken to a hospital in Sala village, the source added.

Twin car bombs claim 18 lives, injure more than 50 others in Hama countryside

18 civilians, including 11 children, were killed and more than 50 others were injured by twin terrorist explosions of two car bomb in the towns of Jidreen and al-Hmairi in Hama countryside.
A source in the province told SANA reporter that a suicide bomber blew up a booby-trapped car in Jidreen town, southwestern countryside of Hama, killing 17 civilians, including 11 children and injuring more than 50 others.
The terrorist bombing caused a huge damage to a number of the town’s houses.
The source added that another terrorist detonated a car bomb in al-Hmairi town in the western countryside in Hama.
The explosion resulted in killing one civilian and wounding others.

Eleven children were among 18 people killed in two bombings in central Syria Friday, state media reported.
The deadly attacks, in which suicide bombers blew themselves up in vehicles, targeted two towns in Hama province.
The first bombing, in the town of Jibrin, in the southwest of the province, killed 17 civilians, including the 11 children, state media said.
The second attack hit the town of al-Humairi and killed one person, state news agency SANA reported.
They come after a double car bombing claimed by al-Qaeda’s Syria affiliate al-Nusra Front killed dozens in the central city of Homs.
