NATO attaches importance to Egypt’s role in region: Official
“The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) attaches importance to Egypt’s strategic role in the Middle East region,” a senior NATO official said.
NATO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Alexander Vershbow said that the NATO is aware that its security is intertwined with the security of the Middle East and North Africa.
Speaking to an Egyptian delegation visiting NATO’s HQ on the 20th anniversary of NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue, Vershbow said NATO has been following up the developments in Egypt and the region, precisely the Arab Spring since its start three years ago.
Vershbow said he had visited Egypt several times when he held the post of the US assistant defense secretary until early 2012.
He said bilateral cooperation between Egypt and NATO continues especially with regard to clearing landmines and other explosive devices, noting that the NATO will propose soon a project that will help Egypt detect mines in the Western desert.
