US engineering battalion in Romania to build missile system base

A US Naval Mobile Construction Battalion will help build a camp at the site of a ballistic missile defense system being installed in Romania’s east.
The 74 Detachment (DET) Romania departed Rota, Spain, on their way to Deveselu Air Base, Romania in late February.
Known as “Seabees”, the 580-person unit commenced work a Security Force Camp in support of the Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense facility.
Romania signed an agreement with in 2011 to host a facility at Deveselu Air Base in support of the European Phased Adaptive Approach to ballistic missile defense.
The Mobile Construction Battalion is building messing and berthing facilities as part of the unit’s final deployment.
NMCB 74’s DET Romania is currently supporting U.S. 6th Fleet, which is headquartered in Naples, Italy but currently has ships deployed in the Black Sea preparing for joint exercises with the Romanian and Bulgarian navies.
