The leader of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar is to meet with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday to discuss growing relations between the secular Libyan House of Representatives and Russia.
The failed state of Libya is making baby steps towards becoming less fractured as it becomes clear that the only force currently operating in Libya with the ability to re-establish law and order in the country is that led by Haftar.
CAIRO, (Sputnik) – The Libyan National Army (LNA), headed by Khalifa Haftar, has started an operation to liberate the country’s eastern city of Derna from the al-Qaeda terrorist organization (outlawed in Russia), the army’s spokesman Ahmed Mismari said on Thursday.
“The battle for Derna has begun,” Mismari told a press briefing in Benghazi.
The spokesman added that the LNA would be pushing terrorists from the city to save its infrastructure and ensure the security of its residents.
The French President Emmanual Macron has hosted the two most influential leaders in Libya in what is being called an attempt to re-unite the totally fractured failed state that has plagued Libyan politics since 2011 when the revolutionary leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown during a NATO invasion.

Khalifa Haftar, the military commander who controls the east of the Libya, has reportedly been receiving Israeli military aid following meetings with Israeli intelligence that were allegedly mediated by the United Arab Emirates.
The failed state of Libya has seen an important victory from the only responsible faction of the four that are currently competing to be the legitimate government in the country.
The Tobruk based Libyan House of Representatives is the only secular, organised and modern governing force in Libya. Crucially it is the one allied with supported by Egypt and its leaders maintain positive contacts with Russia.
Video footage has captured hundreds of Libyans celebrating the official release from prison of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the eldest son of Libyan revolutionary leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The celebrations from the town of Ghat, near the Algerian border and also not far from Niger has sparked questions as to the whereabouts of Saif al-Islam whose official location is not known at this time.
After months of contradictory reports stating that the eldest son of former Libyan revolutionary leader Muammar Gaddafi had been released, today, the terrorist group that had been holding him has confirmed his release.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has spoken about how Egypt must now take control of its border with Libya as well as events inside Libya itself, as the country is a failed state that has no reliable government.
