U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who most notably overseas special counsel Robert Mueller’s ‘Trump-Russia’ investigation, could lose his job this week, according to multiple reports.
Over the last year and a half on the job, Rosenstein has allowed Mueller the leeway to conduct his far-flung and open-ended Russiagate investigation while appearing to show deference to President Donald Trump who nominated him for his current post at the Department of Justice (DOJ).
He has been criticized for allowing political bias to creep into the DOJ and its dealings with other federal agencies, including the FBI, regarding President Trump and the Russia investigation.
In December of 2017, Rosenstein appeared before the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee amid questions about Anti-Trump text messages sent by FBI employees assigned to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Rosenstein testified that Mueller was running his office “appropriately” and without bias, prompting one committee member to suggest Mueller’s team should be attired with ’Democratic donkey jerseys’ and ‘I’m with Hillary t-shirts’.
And just this past week, a New York Times report claimed Rosenstein “suggested last year that he secretly record President Trump in the White House to expose the chaos consuming the administration, and he discussed recruiting cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office for being unfit.”
Not surprisingly, the ‘Russiagate’-aligned media, to include CNN, has been thrown into a frenzy of speculation, with one top Democrat calling the situation a “slow-motion Saturday Night Massacre.”
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), a longtime Russiagate provocateur on the cable news network, also weighed in on cue, touting the “independence of the DOJ”:
Under no circumstances should Rod Rosenstein resign. This would place the Mueller investigation in even greater jeopardy. Rosenstein should continue to do his job, protect the independence of the DOJ, and if the President intends to obstruct justice, force Trump to fire him.

Rosenstein disputes the claims made in the NYT report:
“The New York Times’s story is inaccurate and factually incorrect, […] I will not further comment on a story based on anonymous sources who are obviously biased against the department and are advancing their own personal agenda.”
Trump plans to meet with Rosenstein on Thursday, undoubtedly to decide his fate at the DOJ.
