On Tuesday the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the Class 1 recall of approximately 1,125 pounds of chicken sold at mega-supermarket Wegmans.
The recall was issued after a federal inspector discovered that Wegmans, due to an altered production schedule, produced the chicken products outside the confines of specific approval hours of operations. In other words, the chicken is being taken off the shelves due to improper inspection by federal authorities.
This recent recall is “classified as a situation that has ‘a reasonable probability’ that consuming the product will result in serious, adverse health consequences or death.” [1]
According to the United States Department of Agriculture:
-
“Approximately 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Italian Flavored Chicken Breast Cutlet” with a use-by date of 1/24/2016.
-
Approximately 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Brown Sugar Barbecue Seasoned Chicken Breast Cutlet” with a use-by date of 1/15/2016.
-
3-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Garlic & Fennel Whole Chicken Roaster” with a use-by date of 1/13/2016.
-
1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wokery Sherry Chicken 27482” with use-by date of 1/13/2016.”
Sold in Wegmans retail locations in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, the recalled chicken products have the establishment number “EST or P-7567” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Thankfully, there have been no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Hopefully the announced recall will reach individuals who may have otherwise consumed the chicken and gotten intensely sick.
The Rochester, New York-based supermarket chain is offering full refunds for eligible products.

Hopefully Wegmans will be a bit more fortunate than Chipotle, which has experienced numerous recalls in 2015 – so many that some fans of Chipotle are theorizing that ‘bioterrorism’ is behind the outbreaks.
