Ever since the votes were tallied in November 2016, the US mainstream establishment and its loyal subjects have been gripped with an acute case of tyrannophobia, believing the life as they knew in the liberal bastion of America (and the world) was about to end and that they were all duty-bound to mount what they all privately referred to as “The Resistance” – the last refuge of good citizens dedicated to opposing Trump.
However, in their media-driven hysteria, they may have missed what many intelligent commentators had seen building up a long time ago. Back in 1998, author and liberal philosopher Richard Rorty accurately predicted the election of Donald Trump:
Members of labor unions, and unorganized unskilled workers, will sooner or later realize that their government is not even trying to prevent wages from sinking or to prevent jobs from being exported. Around the same time, they will realize that suburban white-collar workers — themselves desperately afraid of being downsized — are not going to let themselves be taxed to provide social benefits for anyone else.
At that point, something will crack. The nonsuburban electorate will decide that the system has failed and start looking for a strongman to vote for — someone willing to assure them that, once he is elected, the smug bureaucrats, tricky lawyers, overpaid bond salesmen, and postmodernist professors will no longer be calling the shots.
Despite these glaring truths, overpaid US media pundits and an elitist political establishment continue clinging to a contrived conspiracy theory that Russia somehow elected the 45th President of the United States. By doing so, they are are falling even deeper into denial, and missing some of the fundamental changes in the American mindset and societal expectations going forward. Ironically, this collective comfort and political escapism may just hand Donald Trump re-election in 2020.
Surprisingly, the following Letter to the Editor was published this week in ultra-leftist newspaper, The Oregonian, and it more or less sums up on the most basic level, just how misled the political Left are at present in US:
Many of us who did not vote for President Trump were very skeptical of his ability to lead. But, the world did not end when he was elected, as many were predicting. And, following the approval of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, Armageddon did not descend upon us. People did not start dropping dead, as Nancy Pelosi seemed to be implying. Instead, millions of Americans started getting $1,000 to $5,000 bonuses from their employers, and we are now receiving bigger paychecks in 2018.
While the full effects of the tax bill, regulation reduction, corporate repatriation of offshore $billions, and the immediate expensing of equipment purchases and business investments haven’t even kicked in yet, we already have a booming economy, huge job growth and the lowest minority unemployment rate in history. We’re also much safer, with the virtual elimination of ISIS, the end of North Korean missile testing and the real possibility of lasting peace in that dangerous, incendiary region.
It is hard to find fault with these positive developments. Yet, at a time when we’ve only recently started to forget the pain and financial devastation of the Great Recession of 2008/9, we have the rich, elite Bill Maher hoping for another recession, just to end the Trump presidency. And people were on the streets this weekend chanting, “No border, no wall, no nation at all.” With options like these, giving our (admittedly imperfect) president a chance to succeed doesn’t sound so bad after all.
