A U.S. service member killed Thursday in Syria by an improvised bomb was a highly decorated Navy sailor with 23 years experience, and an explosive ordinance disposal specialist, defense officials said Friday.

Chief Petty Officer Dayton had been assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) Two, based in Virginia Beach, Va. Mr. Dayton had earned a number of qualifications in his Navy career. In addition to explosive disposal technician, he was also an expeditionary warfare specialist, a naval parachutist, an enlisted surface warfare specialist, and a diver, according to Navy officials.
