Australia’s battle against terror has seen the biggest expansion of its anti-terrorism laws in nearly a decade today.
The country’s Senate has begun debating plans to give security agencies greater and more far-reaching powers.
On Wednesday Attorney General George Brandis will introduce the Foreign Fighters Bill – designed to crack down on people travelling to conflict zones.
Senator Brandis also revealed that he plans to amend the bills being debated this week to explicitly ban intelligence officers engaging in torture.)

Via our friend in Australia: Just a quick back story, there’s been a lot of media about halal verification recently. Lindt have refused to pay the halal tax. There is a ground swell movement against companies that get this halal certification. In fact a dairy supply just cancelled its halal certification because of pressure on its products by consumers. Lindt never has gotten this certification and refuses to. Halal is often used in reference to foods, i.e. foods that are permissible for Muslims to eat or drink under Islamic Shariʻah. (similar to “kosher”)

He was on bail for killing his ex-wife, sexual assault, and sending threatening letters to family of dead soldiers. Reports on Australian media said he was allowed to be on bail due to abuse in prison.
