A lot has been made about how Hillary and other Democrats have failed to address the needs of rural America and have failed electorally in rural areas. Democratic policy for rural America is actually far better than Republican policy but that isn’t where Democrats have failed.

Aside from having pursued moderate suburban Republican women instead of working class Democrats, one of the reasons for why Hillary lost was widely believed to be the Democratic Party's abandonment of rural America which was almost entirely won by Trump and by Republican candidates for... well, for just about everything.

Last week, the Washington Post posited the assertion that A Democratic party that can't win rural districts... can't win national elections. They happen to be incorrect on two counts, one that Democrats can't win rural districts and the other that they can't win national elections.
