Russia retreats on claims of Al-Baghdadi’s death

A report by the Russian Interfax news agency dated 1st August 2017 timed 11:37 suggests that the Russians also are now starting to doubt that Ibrahim Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, ISIS’s self-proclaimed “Caliph”, was really killed in a Russian air strike on Raqqa as was previously claimed.

Vladimir Putin has signed a bill banning the use of any technology or software that allows access to websites officially blocked on Russian territory such as web anonymizers.
The sponsors of the bill were lawmakers from three Russian parliamentary caucuses – the majority party United Russia, the Communist Party, and the center-left opposition Fair Russia.

Russian girls to be conscripted for military service

According to Russian law,  all male citizens aged 18-27 are obliged to serve in the military for one year. Exceptions are allowed for people with health problems, single providers with pensioner parents or small children, and a few other groups.

Russian manufacturing growth accelerates in July

Further confirmation that the Russian economy is now in a condition of steady growth came from the latest survey by IHS Markit, which showed manufacturing PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) in July rising to a six month high of 52.7.

The Russian government has according to Sputnik issued a public warning against any thought by the Western powers – notably the US – sending weapons to Ukraine.
The suggestion that weapons might be sent to Ukraine has been repeatedly floated in the US, where it was part of the Republican Party platform in last year’s election until Donald Trump famously removed it.

Germany tells EU to prepare countermeasures against US sanctions

The German government has again weighed in with strong criticism of the latest US sanctions bill.
The latest comments have come from German Economics Minister Brigitte Zypries, who is reported by Reuters to have said the following

We consider this as being against international law, plain and simple.  Of course we don’t want a trade war. But it is important the European Commission now looks into countermeasures.

Russia’s expulsion of staff from the US embassy in Moscow is unprecedented and huge

Last autumn, as the Obama administration considered mass expulsions of Russian diplomats from the US in response to the burgeoning Russiagate scandal, John Tefft – the US ambassador to Russia – is reported to have warned against taking this step.  Tefft’s reasons for opposing it were that the likely strong response from the Russians, which would lead to expulsions of US diplomats from Russia, would threaten the effective work of the US embassy in Moscow and of the US consulates in Russia.
