The city of Chicago is suing Smollett for the cost of overtime that the police department incurred while investigating the hoax. The actor counter-sued for malicious prosecution. Smollett is due to appear in court on Webb’s charges on February 24.

Whatcott's flyers, distributed in Oger's voting district, characterized the candidate as a “biological male” who was promoting “homosexuality and transvestism.” The flyer also advocated rejecting Oger in favor of "God's definition of gender and marriage." Oger claimed that the flyer was intended to provoke hatred.

Because of the fake news account, the students were threatened with expulsion by their school. Kentucky Secretary of State Allison Grimes condemned the boys and accused them of hatred. This is a classic example of the power of the media to engineer public opinion with fake news.

The Center of Immigration Studies also is suing SPLC President Richard Cohen and Heidi Beirich, who runs the group’s so-called Hatewatch blog. The CIS asserts it does not meet the SPLC'sown definition of a hate group. CIS says the SPLC's true agenda is to stifle debate on important issues and to silence opposition to the leftist agenda.
