Brad Schreiber's great new book is Music Is Power: Popular Songs, Social Justice and the Will to Change, and we chat for an hour about some of our favorite tunes that influenced, or reflected, social change.Schreiber was a guest here a few years ago, talking about his book Revolution's End, exposing the deep history of the Symbionese Liberation Army and the kidnapping of Patty Hearst.  You can hear that podcast here.
We open with Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" by Everclear, and launch into a discussion of the folk era that led to the rise of Bob Dylan, and that leads us to the Kingston Trio, Phil Ochs, Joan Baez and others.  Punctuated by samples of some great political songs, we bounce through the decades and many genres to include James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, The Dead Kennedys, Frank Zappa and many others.
So take a break from our usual fare, and enjoy this look back at music and politics.  For more info on Schreiber, click here.
