You’ve probably heard of victim narratives, but do you know what they are?
A victim narrative is a way of telling a story – of an individual, of a group large or small – blaming everyone else and everything else for their bad choices. It has often been said that our prisons are full of innocent men, a cynical claim that means they are really guilty but protest their innocence. This isn’t true, most convicted prisoners accept their guilt, but almost to a man they have a victim narrative that explains why their imprisonment is somebody else’s fault.
What is the best way to get away with murder? In the United States especially, it is to wear a badge. Police officers who shoot innocent citizens are seldom brought to book. In the UK, police shootings do happen, but they are extremely rare. Domestic murders on the other hand are sadly all too common. Men murder their wives and lovers; women murder their husbands and lovers.
If convicting innocent men of rape is not bad enough, exculpating women convicted of murder on compelling evidence is no better if not worse, yet that is the mission of the misnamed Centre For Women’s Justice. Although this pernicious organisation has had charitable status since only 2016, it has been around a lot longer than that as Justice For Women, with which it is synonymous. Set up by the lawyer Harriet Wistrich and her lover Julie Bindel, its first big win came in 1995 when it secured the release of Emma Humphreys.
