A federal appeals court upheld a 2021 Connecticut law that eliminated the state’s longstanding religious exemption from childhood immunization requirements for schools, colleges and day care facilities. The plaintiffs said the law is hostile and jeopardizes their rights to medical freedom and child rearing.
Last night, while that horrible CNN debate was droning on-- the DNC should tell CNN there will be no more debates on CNN if they use anchors as viciously bigoted as Abby Phillip-- there was an actual special election going on in Connecticut. One way to look at it is-- a Democrat replaced another Democrat in a blue state. And that is what happened.
Coup d'état-- The dismantling of American Democracy by Nancy OhanianThe Connecticut Post, part of the Hearst chain, serves the southwest part of the state-- primarily Fairfield County (think Fairfield, Bridgeport, Trumbull Darien, Stratford, New Canaan, Derby). It reaches over 50,000 families a day. Hillary won Fairfield County handily-- 238,723 (58.2%) to 155,457 (37.9%)-- and last year Democrats swept the county.
I first met Jim Himes when he was running for Congress in 2008, turning a red district blue. The southwest corner of Connecticut is a pretty wealthy area and had been represented since 1987 by moderate Republican Chris Shays, the last New England House Republican at the time, clinging on to a House seat. Although Shays won 14 of the district’s 17 towns, Himes took 80% of the vote in Bridgeport, the districts largest town and also beat him in the 2nd and third largest towns, Norwalk and Stamford. He beat Shays 51-47% and today the district has a nice safe D+7 PVI.

A great night for progressives and reformers Yesterday Nate Silver said that "In races where insurgent, progressive Democrats are running against party-backed nominees ... the establishment Democrat is winning 89% of the time." If not so sure about definitions that make that even remotely true. And it certainly wasn't true last night. I'll give you two examples.

Connecticut recently had its State Open track and field championships at Willow Brook Park.
A a biological boy, who is now transgender, broke the State Open records for girls in both the 100 and 200-meter runs.
Terry Miller of Bulkeley, a transgender, won the 100 meter dash, while the runner-up was Andraya Yearwood of Cromwell, also a transgender.
Yearwood won the Class M sprint titles last year, while Terry Miller competed on the boys’ team during the winter indoor season before joining the girls’ competition.
