Are Russia’s Avangard and Sarmat missiles really the game-changers which they’re depicted to be?
Our review of the State of the Nation speech given by President Vladimir Putin draws to a close. The speech was massive, and there remain in fact areas that we still did not cover that are worth reading in the full speech, linked here. However, insofar as Russian technology meets the world stage, this last area, scientific research and development, is extremely visible and important.
Fox News reported on December 13 that the new Meteor ramjet powered missile system is now in full production, with US and NATO allied fighter planes expecting to carry the missile as standard munitions.
The March 1 announcement by President Vladimir Putin that Russia has viable hypersonic weapons was finally accepted and taken seriously by the United States. Now, the American military has placed new urgency on hypersonic weapons development.
The website for Metro UK news ran a November 9th piece detailing the “terrifying” Russian Avangard program as a reality. The piece details some new information, saying that the Sarmat II (NATO codename “Satan”) missile system is capable of launching up to 24 Avangard hypersonic glide weapons into orbit, from which they can carry out their missions:
Back in March, Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled to the public an array of so called ‘super weapons’ which are capable of delivering a nuclear payload, and to be able to do so in a way that Western militaries are unable to counter or intercept. Essentially, it means that Russia has in its hands nuclear capable weapons which render the American ballistic missile shield absolutely worthless. A few days ago, it was reported that the Avangard system was passing field testing and was due to enter service.
On July 19th and 20th, The Russian Defense Ministry announced several milestones of progress in its advanced weapons systems programs. These programs were revealed to the world in March of this year, when Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the State of the Russian Federation speech.
The Russian News Agency TASS reported on 12 March that the Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said that the Ministry has signed a defense contract on the most advanced Avangard hypersonic missile complex.
According to an unnamed additional source, the complex is expected to come into full service no later than 2019.
