I spend a lot of time on the phone with congressional candidates trying to figure out who to believe and who not to believe. How progressive are they? How courageous? How capable? It didn't take much of a discussion to figure out AOC was going to be a super-star if she ever beat Joe Crowley, which seemed impossible to everyone (but her and her posse). But she beat him-- and she's a superstar. Sometimes we get disappointed. I talked so much about how great Jared Golden (ME) would be... but did he ever turn out to be a dud! I got that all wrong.

One of the big surprises in recent years when I talk with new congressional candidates is the number who tell me that the reason they're running is climate change. The first one who ever told me that was when I spoke with a state Senator in California struggling with the idea of leaving his family behind in his beloved southern California to immerse himself in tawdry Washington by running for Congress.

There has been a lot of talk how Biden is the only viable candidate-- meaning Frackenlooper and Delaney are not viable, just Fox News trolls at this point-- who has not taken a position on the Green New Deal. And how he's the only 2020 candidate who has refused to sign the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge. Well, that's not actually true. Trump has also refused to sign the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge-- Trump and Biden.

I've got some bad pot holes on the way from my house to the main road. I take a detour every time I drive to or from home to anywhere. It's annoying, not horrible, just annoying. But no one can brag to me how they fixed it unless it's fixed. It's not about statistics or bombast; it's about being able to take the direct route from my house to the test of the world.

We try to say it at least once a week-- and we've been doing that for over two years: Audrey Denney would make a kick-ass, effective member of Congress. It's not her fault she was born and raised and still lives in a sprawling rural district that voted for Trump by 20 points or that the PVI is a daunting R+11. That was certainly enough to make the DCCC look elsewhere. But it didn't discourage Denney. She campaigned like she could actually win.

It has been part of the neo-liberal movement within the Democratic Party to weaken union power inside of the party-- and even weaken unions in society.

Some people do it right-- and some don't. Three that came in early that demonstrate how to do it are by a progressive candidate in Georgia, Marqus Cole, a progressive Northern California candidate, Audrey Denney, and a new progressive action committee run by Randy Bryce. Let's start with Cole, who's running to flip a Republican seat in the suburbs northwest of Atlanta.

The U.S. is the only advanced country in the world without a paid family leave program in place-- and American women have been picking up on that. Paid family leave was a big issue in Hillary Clinton's campaign that she handled very well-- but which was almost entirely ignored by the media. And Ivanka Trump-Kushner has been talking it up as a theory that's supposed to put a happy face on her father's neo-fascist regime.
